Cake Cutting Fees

If you fall inlove with a cake baker that isn’t affiliated with your reception site, you might encounter the notion of cake- cutting fees. That’s because if your wedding cake was part of your reception package plan and you’re asking the site to cut someone else’s cake, they will likely charge you a “courtesy” fee of something like $1.50 or $2.00 per slice.I think this is pretty cheesy but that’s the way the industry runs. However,
just because this is standard operating procedure,it doesn’t mean that you can’t question it.So do so,as soon as you find your caterer.

Ask straight out,“If I bring in my own wedding cake, will you charge me to cut and serve it?”Not all caterers will and if yours agrees not to,get that all in writing so you can save yourself time down the line of hassling over unexpected cake-cutting fees on your bill.

Caution

In my opinion,a great wedding cake baker always has a photo album of cakes baked for previous brides and grooms. Bakers should be so proud of confections they’ve made in the past that they’re compelled to put together a collection so future clients can see photographic examples of their work. That’s not to say that a great cake baker might not have photos to show you, but I’d be cautious if that were the case.Ask for references and follow up on them.
